One of the popular sporting events in Alaska is the Iditarod dog sledding race. The race happens yearly in early March and the trail is close to 1000 miles. It takes approximately 9 to 12 days to complete.

It is an Alaskan experience to go and watch the start of the race. People will gather in a frozen lake and play while they are waiting for the start. There are people grilling, snow machining, ice fishing, and kids playing all over.

No external dogs are allowed so the sled dogs are not distracted, so the Snowieners did not get to see this. However, they are practicing very hard to see if someday they could have a team of their own.

This winter it has been very warm and the trail conditions are bad. Here is a link to a video from one of a senior musher.
