Hiking the Nordic Ski Trails in Girdwood

Image Girdwood is just a short drive from Anchorage. During winter, this is one of our favorite spots for downhill skiing. Being so familiar with the mountain, we decided to try hiking the ~2.5 mile (~3000 ft elevation) this summer. It was a hot day and we were very naive thinking we were ready for it. Fortunately, we found the Nordic Ski trail system in the area. This trail system was built through the rain forest and there are gorgeous views everywhere.

ImageWe did the 5K ski trail which allows dogs only during summer. The trail is wide and hilly at some points. I thought this was a great choice for a hot sunny day, because the trees kept it cooler than everywhere else. Additionally there is a creek perfect for a cooling down break.

We all had a great time and it was great to see the dogs run free and get excited every time they heard a squirrel.

Thanks Jane. I hope I can show a bit of what Alaska has to offer.

Oh, that’s so cool. Now if only we could see the place in a stroller…

    • snowieners

Tons of people bring their strollers. I think this trail would be perfect, because the hills are moderate most of the time.

What a great trail and always good to have some water to cool off in 🙂

The pups are losing the fear to water little by little. I think they are learning a lot from watching other dogs.

Wow, it really looks green! We miss the green grass and trees. The desert SW, Dry and Sand! Have a great day!

    • snowieners

      Sand must be nice too.
We get a lit of rain/ snow but the ambient is very dry. It’s very strange.

I just love reading your blog and seeing all the great pictures of Alaska!

Do you ever have to worry about bears on your hikes?

    • snowieners

Oh yeah, it is a constant concern except for winter. A close friend who spends most of the time walking in the city saw 8 bears this week.
It is definitely bear and moose country.

I haven’t seen one so far. I’ve been very lucky.
